Old Time Music Campout: Songs and Tunes for All

September 22nd – 24th 2017
Friday at 3 PM – Sunday 2 PM

Sponsored by Old Time Players of Maine and Searsport Shores Ocean Camping

Welcomes all players and listeners that appreciate old time music to a weekend of playing, learning, sharing, and listening with some of the best old time players in New England. Events include workshops, night performances, outdoor bread oven, old style potato chip cooker, slow and fast jam enclosed spaces, porch pickin’ party, Art Studio gospel morning play around and lots of old time jamming & story telling.

This weekend is sponsored by the Old Time Music Players of Maine and is hosted by Searsport Shores Ocean Camping in Searsport, ME. Come with some friends and make new ones while you are here celebrating American String band music, stories and the cultures that brought us those traditions. All types of camping is available that weekend including tenters, RVers, safari and cabin rentals.

Appalachian old-time music is the main theme for the weekend.

Friday
3-6Pm Old Time Music workshop- An introduction to Old Time Music, playing with others, the style and a little history.

6 P.M. Welcome reception at the Art Studio
6:30 -9:00 Reception Jam- Hosted by Old Time Players of Maine
9:00-? Pickin’ with friends…by the campfire or in the Studio

Saturday
7:30-9 A.M. The Old Time Waffle Cafe is open

9 AM Slow Jam and Fast Jam Tents open. Players choice. Many of the playing sessions will be led by an old time player.
Workshops begin at 10 A.M. The first 8 players are seated in a circle on chairs. Extra players or people that just want to observe are welcome to stand around the circle to listen in.

10:00 A.M. Banjo Workshop with Jon Kerr
11:30 A.M. Teaching Tunes and Banjo Tunings with Bill Smith
12:30 P.M. *Fish Chowder and Hot Biscuit Lunch followed by Guided Jamming Session (learn some new tunes)
1:30 P.M. Country Blues Fiddle technique with Jim Hyland

5:30 P.M. Potluck Picnic
7:00 P.M. Pickup Bands- George Fowler & Art Bryan host.  Every player is encouraged to form and register impromptu bands by 6 PM Saturday. **
8:00 P.M. Saturday Evening Concert Old Time Music and Stories at the Recreation Hall.
9:30 P.M.-? Pickin’ with friends…by the campfire or in the Studio.

Sunday Morning
7:30-9 A.M. The Old Time Waffle Cafe is open

10 A.M. Gospel themed group Jam.
12:30 P.M. Final Group Play Around and dessert party. Tunes will include: Cluck Old Hen (A Modal, maybe we’ll pluck the E & A strings a bit), Snowdrop, Angeline the Baker (D Major), Bonnie on the Rhine, Twin Sisters (A Modal), Snowdrop, Bound to Have a Little Fun (G),

Jam Tunes May Include: Sail Away Ladies (A), Molly Put the Kettle On (D), Jenny Lind Polka (G), Shoot the Turkey Buzzard, Grasshopper Sitting On a Sweet Potato Vine (G), Whiskey Before Breakfast (G), etc.

**On-site sign up for Old Time pick-up bands will go on through Saturday up until 6 p.m.  Advance sign up by email is also an option (please confirm on site on Saturday). Email Art Bryan to sign up in advance or for more information.

First 6 Old Time bands (or solo performers) will be offered 10 minute slots. It’s not a contest and they won’t be any prizes. The weekend is about playing for the joy and satisfaction of having done it.  We are trying to get participation from as many folks as possible.

***Campout Recording Studio: A recording studio will be set up for the weekend open to anyone wanting to record a tune with new or old friends.

*Clogging and Flat foot dancing is encouraged*
